Girls Scouts in Gear
Live Love Velo hosted the Girl Scouts for “Girl Scouts in Gear”, a program created to teach bike safety and skills to girls, and, hopefully, to generate some excitement about bicycling for fun, fitness or just getting around. Seventy girls attended, ranging from kindergarteners to tweens. The girls rotated though stations, starting with the required “Safety Check” and “Rules of the “Road”. From there, they were free to choose from additional stations. The snack station included a lesson on healthy food choices. Making crafts made with recycled bike chains and cogs was a hit and the girls had a blast on both the flat and hilly obstacle courses. About a half dozen girls gave up their training wheels, several for good! The girls put it all together and enjoyed a group ride around the perimeter of the school grounds to finish off the day.
Special thanks to our partners and sponsors. Our generous friends at Carl Hart Bicycles of Middle Island supplied water bottles and used bike parts for our craft station. Raw Revolution hooked us up with delicious snack bars and Finish Line USA gave products and tools to spruce up an entire peloton of girls’ bikes.
A true team effort on the part of Live Love Velo, the “Girls Scouts in Gear” program achieved it’s mission. The girls had a great time and left with information and skills that will empower them to become safe and happy members of the cycling community, and who know, maybe even future racers! Chloe, who ditched her training wheels, summed it up: When asked, “What did you like best about the day?”, she exclaimed, “Everything!”
