Silvana’s Scoop on the first LLV clinics of 2013
Sunday evening the women of Live Love Velo were treated to double header clinics covering racing basics and training fundamentals. We kicked off the meeting with introductions and how we imagined ourselves cycling to the top of the podium in our ideal bike race. I always imagined myself grinding up to the peak of a grueling mountain to throngs of screaming fans. And maybe a celebratory glass of bubbly at the top!
Then Mike Cole, our generous sponsor, drew from his experience and vast knowledge of all -things-cycling to offer us an informative primer on racing basics. We were lucky to have several more experienced teammates chime in to help explain the various types of road, mountain bike, track, and cyclocross races. Many of us were surprised to learn of all the racing options available to cyclists almost year-round. After a scrumptious pizza and pasta dinner (thank you for picking it up Andrea!), we met Mike Monastero, USAC Level 1 cycling coach extraordinaire. Mike helped demystify training and gave excellent pointers that anyone could easily incorporate into their existing training routines. He stressed the importance of developing a customized training plan and focusing on aerobic conditioning. His recommendation to keep a training log really resonated with me, so I will be maintaining one going forward.
Finally, we capped off our clinics with an East End Cycling Team all team meeting to set up the team for the 2013 season. It was great to see so many Long Island racers—novice and experienced, together on a mission. I know every teammate left the meeting excited to try a new approach, or add an element to their existing training. Some were even inspired to try a new cycling discipline in the season to come. We can’t wait to get in our kits and on our bikes!
